DAY
ONE: Convenient, mid afternoon departure from Los Angeles
with easy connections from all southern California Amtrak and
Metro Link stations. You will travel on Amtrak’s Superliner,
the Sunset Limited in private sleeper accommodations. Daylight
travel today through Palm Springs, Yuma and Mariposa (Phoenix)
Arizona. . All meals in the dining car are included when traveling
in sleeper accommodations. The observation car has wrap around
windows with seats turned toward the windows. There is a snack
bar/bar in the lower level and late run movies are shown each
evening. Overnight on board.
DAY
TWO: Shortly after breakfast this morning, you will arrive
in El Paso, Texas. We will be met by private motor coach for
a two hour ride to Carlsbad New Mexico. After an included lunch,
we will visit the vast, Carlsbad Caverns, a series of enormous
rooms created by a limestone fossil reef percolating under
ground creating one of the worlds largest and most mysterious
tourist attractions. Later this afternoon we will travel north
to Roswell where the mystery continues as we visit the International
UFO Museum and Research Center where we will learn the details
of the 1947 report of an alien space ship landing along with
many other accounts of UFO sightings. Continue on through beautiful
Cloudcroft and Ruidoso to the Mescalero Apache Reservation
and the spectacular Inn Of The Mountain Gods Luxury Spa/resort
and Casino for overnight.
DAY
THREE: Time to enjoy the gorgeous mountain views, the
casino and the spa. We will leave shortly after lunch and continue
to Alamorgordo.NM where we will visit the New Mexico Museum
of Space History with it’s I-MAX Theater with a 40 ft. wrap
around screen and planetarium.
Travel south through Las Cruces to Santa Teresa to visit the
War Eagles Air Museum to see restored World War two and Korean
War Air planes. Overnight in Mesilla Valley Inn in Las Cruces.
Dinner included tonight.
DAY
FOUR: Today
we will visit White Sands National Monument where rare gypsum
deposits form snow white dunes that rise
60 ft. above the Tularosa Basin floor. It’s A short drive to
the Trinity Site where the detonating of the first nuclear
device in 1945 changed history. Our next stop is 52 miles west
of Socorro to see the Very Large Array a series of 27 radio
and space observation dishes that are 80 feet across dotting
the landscape. Continue on to Albuquerque and Overnight at
the Sandia Hotel & Casino.
DAY
FIVE: We’ll take a ride on the world’s longest cable car
to the top of Sandia Peak where we will enjoy an included lunch
before continuing west again on Highwy 40 to visit the Acoma
Pueblo considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited
settlements in the country dating back to 1150 A.D. Our next
stop will be El Morro National Monument. The main feature is
Inscription Rock where the Conquistadores carved their names
in the 16th century followed by the many centuries of explorers,
settlers and Spanish noblemen who all left their marks.Continue
on to Gallup New Mexico, the heart of the Navajo nation. Amtrak’s
Southwest Chief arrives in Gallup in the early evening and
just in time for dinner on board. Private sleeper accommodations
for overnight.
DAY
SIX: Time for an early included breakfast before our morning
arrival in to southern California Amtrak stations.
Three breakfasts, three lunches and three dinner included.
